Publications

As part of our fulfillment of our mission to disseminate information about the history of New Mexico and the borderlands, the Historical Society of New Mexico commenced a publications program in the early 1900s.

Scholarly Publication —

La Crónica de Nuevo México

HSNM in 1913 published its first bulletin, Old Santa Fé, edited by Ralph Emerson Twitchell. Unfortunately, it ceased publication after a few years. In 1926, the Society launched the New Mexico Historical Review, edited by Lansing B. Bloom and Paul A. F. Walter. The Review quickly became a prestigious regional publication. However, in 1963 financial pressure forced HSNM to turn the operation over to the University of New Mexico. The university still publishes the New Mexico Historical Review (NMHR) four times a year as a peer-reviewed journal. HSNM still monetarily supports the printing of the journal. Also, HSNM members can subscribe to NMHR with their HSNM membership and receive a discount on the subscription price.

Once HSNM returned to a more sound financial position in the 1970s, the Society’s members and the board still wanted to produce a publication to fulfill the organization’s mission. So in 1976, the HSNM board launched the La Crónica de Nuevo México to serve as a medium for Society news, scholarly history articles, and book reviews. La Crónica is still published today as one of the benefits for members.

If you are interested in submitting an article for consideration to appear in La Crónica, please refer to the “Publications Guidelines.”

Archives of La Crónica de Nuevo México

The University of New Mexico digital repository hosts archives of La Crónica de Nuevo México from issue 1 to 102 (1976–2015).

Another way to stay connected to our members is through the HSNM Facebook page. Latest news on the Society’s programs are shared to members and the general public, as well as sharing interesting historical photographs and articles on all aspects of the state’s history and heritage.

HSNM over the last century has also published or supported the printing of almost one hundred books and pamphlets on the history of New Mexico, and in more recent years it partnered with the University of New Mexico Press. The latest contribution was in 2012 with the three volume set of Sunshine ad Shadows in New Mexico’s Past, by board member Richard Melzer, as part of New Mexico’s Statehood Centennial celebrations.

  1. Manuscripts should have a word count of 2,500–3,500 words. However, longer manuscripts will be considered for special editions or for publication over more than one issue.
  2.  Manuscript file should be saved in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx file suffix).
  3. Page layout should be for 8 1/2 in. x 11 in., with 1 inch margins on all sides.

  8.  Remove images from the text. See below for Illustrations.

Illustrations

We encourage authors to submit illustrations to accompany their manuscript.

  1. Authors can submit a list of recommended illustrations and/or send low resolution, small image files separately from the manuscript file.
  2. If your manuscript is approved, you will be asked to provide high resolution (minimum 300 dpi) image files in TIF, JPEG, or PNG. These files can be delivered through Google Drive, Dropbox, or another method agreed to by the HSNM Publications Editor.
  3. The author is responsible for obtaining permission to publish the images and pay any user fees. A copy of the permission will be shared with the HSNM Publication Editor before an image is used.
